How to Send a Free Text Message to Iridium
Using the web-to-phone interface is straightforward, but requires precision to ensure the message is delivered to the LEO constellation:
- Enter the Destination Number: Start with the Iridium prefix +8816 or +8817. Do not use local exit codes like 011 or 00.
- Compose Your Message: Keep it concise. Iridium terminals support the standard 160-character limit. Note that special characters and non-Latin alphabets might be stripped by older hardware.
- Sender Information: Always include your name or a callback number within the message body, as the recipient will see the message coming from a system gateway, not your personal phone.
- Delivery Window: Once you click "Send," the message enters the Iridium ground station and is beamed to the nearest satellite. Delivery usually occurs within 30 seconds if the recipient has a clear sky view.
Tips for Successful Communication
Satellite phones are line-of-sight devices. If your message is not being received, it is likely because the recipient is indoors, in a deep canyon, or under dense forest canopy. The Iridium network will attempt to deliver the satellite SMS for up to 7 days if the device is powered off or out of range.
